Unwin Safety Systems has launched the new Titan range to secure transportable powerchairs weighing up to 200kg when travelling in all types of accessible vehicle.
Leading the way in heavy duty restraint development, Unwin originally designed The Titan range to meet the specific requirements of wheelchair manufacturer Invacare. Invacare was looking for a restraint solution to fit five of their heavier transportable powerchairs: The Zephyr, Storm3, Typhoon I & II and TDX models.
The Titan 2, 3 and 4 systems were consequently developed to fit these particular models and over time the range has evolved to accommodate other wheelchair brands such as Balder and Handicare.
The range has been designed with longer and stronger webbing to offer easy and safe attachment to heavier wheelchairs. Even distribution of wheelchair and passenger weight is provided by specially designed double plunger mechanisms which fit into the vehicle floor tracking systems in a conventional manner. Securement of the rear webbing restraints is fast and efficient due to the incorporation of Snaplock fixings and over centre buckle mechanisms which ensure all webbings are fully adjustable. The complete range has been dynamically tested with wheelchair models to meet ISO 10542-5 and 7176-19 standards and offers outstanding passenger safety without compromise.
The Titan 2 system restrains the following transportable powerchairs :
Invacare Zephyr, Balder F290, F280 and F270 and Handicare Puma and Beatle Y.e.S
The Titan 3 secures the Invacare Storm3 and the Titan 4 is specifically designed for the Invacare TDX, Typhoon and Typhoon II.
Understanding the need of the market for a generic solution, Unwin Safety Systems has recently developed Titan 1, a universal system for transportable wheelchairs weighing up to 200kg.
The Titan 1 kit comprises of a six part webbing restraint system made up of three pairs of fully adjustable tie-down straps with built-in over centre buckles and Karabiner fixings. The transportable wheelchair or powerchair is secured to a converted vehicle’s floor via one pair of restraints attached to its front brackets while two pairs are attached to the rear. The system does not require additional rail fitting. The flexible Titan 1 is available either with Rail fixings or Unwin Solo anchors to meet the needs of the market.
Whilst the system has been successfully crash tested with Sunrise Groove and Salsa and Pride Q600, Q600 Sport and Q6000 upon these particular wheelchair manufacturers’ request, Titan 1 remains a universal restraint for any transportable wheelchairs up to a maximum weight of 200kg.
“Working closely with several leading powerchair manufacturers in the development of the Titan range has been a mutually successful experience. All companies who were involved in the development process take pride in the same ethos as Unwin – to help provide maximum independence for disabled people without compromising on safety. The new Titan range will do just that,” commented Gerry O’Connor, Unwin's Director of Sales and Marketing.
