New Training Room
UNWIN SAFETY Systems has called on providers of accessible transport to safeguard spending on training.
At a time when cutbacks in public spending are affecting people with disabilities, Unwins believe that investing in new facilities for the training of transport and care workers, particularly drivers and their assistants, is important.
The training room at Unwin’s Somerset HQ now has new equipment and furniture. Wall-displays illustrate Unwin’s development as the leading maker of wheelchair safety systems and show decades of technological improvements.
Bob Appleyard, Unwin’s main trainer, said: ‘Across the industry there have been fantastic technological advances, but we must have people at grass-roots level who know how to use the equipment. Otherwise, no one gets the full benefit, particularly the most important people, those who are sitting in the wheelchairs.
‘We need to focus more than ever these days on the human element. That means training. That means practising – and understanding.
‘To effectively secure people with disabilities, you do need to understand what you are trying to achieve. You can’t just apply inflexible rules, you need to have a deeper comprehension and empathy.’
Unwin Safety Systems now runs basic and intermediate training courses and a simple questionnaire helps the company to assess which course would suit applicants best.
Unwin believes in personalisation. Mr Appleyard drafted the UK’s revolutionary new scheme for providing wheelchair users with passports detailing their precise requirements. Known as PAS 900, and published by the British Standards Institution, the scheme should eventually give more than a million wheelchair users a more personalised service.
Mr Appleyard said: ‘If we can put just one more smile, one more contented look on the face of someone struggling with the rigours of disability, that’s a success.’
UNWIN Safety Systems will be mixing and matching at APSE Aviemore 2012, Scotland’s largest public sector Fleet, Waste and Grounds Services Exhibition.
