A UNIQUELY stylish range of components for use in wheelchair accessible vehicles has been launched by Unwin Safety Systems.
The new system – called Solar – has been created because Unwin research across Europe revealed that convertors and their customers wanted products that put aesthetics first.
They also wanted a range that could do whatever they wanted it to while still meeting the requirements of European Type Approval.
Solar therefore combines Unwin’s renowned commitment to safety with interesting contemporary design, total flexibility and a dedicated approach to development and testing.
‘Aesthetics came top of the list of must-haves and we’ve matched that brief,’ said Gerry O’Connor, Unwin’s Director of Sales and Marketing. ‘The result is a fresh approach to the WAV market.
‘Solar looks good. It’s got great detailing, lots of nice touches, and it’s unobtrusive. It’s not loud or flash or gaudy, it’s distinctive and subtle and smart.
‘There’s a consistent theme of black and silver that blends in with, and enhances, the interior of vehicles.
‘It looks and feels like it’s original equipment from the vehicle manufacturer. It’s got OEM stamped all over it.’
Bespoke Solar kit is supplied after Unwin staff have consulted with convertors to establish exactly what they want.
‘It’s designed in-house by our engineering team to suit what convertors want it to do and to make it work for them and their clients.’
As Unwin Safety Systems has its own unique dynamic testing laboratory, the company can also carry out dynamic testing of vehicles and Solar kits.
‘We can create kit to the specific geometry that convertors are using inside a car,’ said Gerry.
‘We can test it on the sled, we can know it works, we can tweak it if people want us to.
Individual elements of Solar include Unwin’s strongest ever ATF (Aluminium Track Fitting) feet, and two choices of solo anchor. (Unwin won an industry award for design and innovation for inventing the solo anchor).
Other features include a 4m electric reel, neat floor pockets, storage bags for storing parts when not in use and more rubber on karabiners to give better protection to wheelchairs.
International regulations require wheelchair safety systems to be able to restrain weights of 85 kg, but – in common with all other Unwin products – Solar has been engineered to cope with a minimum of 120 kg.
Solar. Simply safe.
UNWIN Safety Systems has become the first UK manufacturer of wheelchair safety systems to open its own dynamic laboratory for crash tests.
