Unwin Safety Systems was set up 50 years ago by Norman Unwin, who created the world’s first device to secure wheelchairs in vehicles.

Over the years, the company has continued to grow and today it occupies a 3000sqm. factory in Somerset, with modern manufacturing, design and testing facilities.

Throughout this period of continued growth, the Company has been at the forefront of developments to improve safety for wheelchair users, and in designing innovative systems to increase the strength of vehicles.

Unwin Safety System is a worldwide business. As well as being the UK market leader, the company has built up an extensive export activity across the developed world through a distribution network spanning over 40 countries in 5 continents.

In both the home and overseas markets the key to success is cutting edge technical expertise and an indepth knowledge of the legal requirements which our customers need to meet.

      As a company, Unwin strategic objectives are to:

      • Maintain leadership of the British and European wheelchair safety markets, through product innovation & customer service.
      • Continue to develop key products for seat manufacturers, including removable seat fixtures & seat belts.
      • Develop markets for structural floors with Innotrax in the UK and mainland Europe.
      • Seek to supply and develop selected market territories outside Europe.
      • Develop other market opportunities within the vehicle technologies, passenger safety and the needs of disabled people.

      As the leading provider of passenger safety products and an ISO 9001:2000 company, Unwin Safety Systems have a strong commitment to safety . We aim to meet, or exceed, all regulatory requirements and Codes of Practice, on all products, which we manufacture and supply.

      It is our objective to give customers and end users complete confidence in the ability of our products to offer safety during travel, provided they are installed and used in the correct manner.

      Unwins carry out a stringent testing programme on all products, both at established external test-houses, and also at our own extensive in-house testing facilities.

      Unwins use a number of accredited test houses for specific and general testing. These include:

      • Transport Research Laboratory (TRL) (UK)
      • Motor Industry Research Association (MIRA) (UK)
      • Millbrook Proving Ground (UK)
      • STATUS (UK)
      and a number of others outside the UK
      • IDIADA (Spain)
      • TNO (Netherlands)
      • TUV (Germany)

      Many tests have been witnessed by VCA, VOSA, RDW, TUV and other authorising bodies depending on the test parameters and other local requirements which may vary from country to country in some instances.
